Anchor About Discovery

Discover Discovery

Discovery International School is not just a school for children from other countries. It is for any family, Norwegian or foreign, who would like their child to receive an above-excellent education, in English, that prepares them for life in an ever-changing world.

At Discovery International School, we believe the children are our future. Our goal is to instill a lifelong love and passion for learning, through learning how to learn and making the learning process fun and creative. We will be using the world-renowned International Baccalaureate programs: Primary Years Program (PYP) and Middle Years Program (MYP) as the platform for our learning environment and curriculum. Our students will come through the programs with the ability to look at problems/situations from a variety of perspectives, by means of interdisciplinary learning techniques. They will be encouraged to constantly ask "why" and question the answers they receive, in a respectful way, so that they are able to get the core of understanding for themselves. You can find out more information about the International Baccalaureate (IB) program on our Educational Excellence page.

Something that is very special about Discovery International School is the central role that Music will play. When we decided to start a school, we asked the question, “How can we create absolutely the best environment for children that will maximize the learning potential and support the learning process?” After much research, one of the key answers to that question is: Music. Every child at Discovery will play an instrument in the orchestra or band. Every child will sing in the choir, and every child will participate in an elevated drama and art program. You can read more about the science of music and the brain on our Music & The Brain page.

The foundation of Discovery International School is has Christian roots, and we will teach basic morals, values and ethics that are in accordance with our foundational beliefs. These include kindness, forgiveness, respect for one another and property, as well as the golden rule to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. We believe, however, from a curriculum perspective, that what is taught in school should be neutral and inclusive and respectful of all different faiths and beliefs. We will present conflicting points of view in an environment of neutrality, respect and safety. We will encourage students to learn as much as they can about all faiths and religions, so that whatever beliefs they choose to hold dear, they are able to own what they believe, as well as explain and defend it. You can read more about what will be covered and taught in the religion classes on our Discovering Faith page.

The reason we chose the name, “Discovery International School” is because it gets to the heart of what we hope to see children do: Discover the world around them. Along with that concept comes another piece of the foundation of our school, and that is: “Out-of-the-Box Thinking.” At Discovery, we will have an innovation and design center called The Imaginarium Lab where children will go to specifically think about how to connect different subjects and design creative solutions, for problems they have been presented. You will find more information on The Imaginarium Lab page.

Students will be encouraged to form an educated opinion about things and share that opinion with others around them. Other students’ viewpoints may differ, but they will be taught how to listen actively and then express their differences in a respectful and rational manner. Discovery International School will be a safe environment where bullying in any form is not tolerated. Discovery will emphasize caring for others and helping one another in all settings. Students will also have the opportunity to use the skills they learn to reach out to the local communities in service. You can learn more about our community service programs on our Service Learning page.

We also believe that good, nutritional food plays a significant role in creating the best learning environment possible, and helps to form healthy habits for the future. At Discovery International School, healthy, warm food will be "on the table" for every student. We will provide a hot, nutritious and delicious lunch for all students. Children with allergies or other unique needs will be provided

special meals accordingly. In addition, we will provide healthy snacks throughout the day such as fruits and fresh vegetables. For those students in SFO (our "SFO" will be called DASA - Discovery After School Activities), we will offer warm meals for breakfast and dinner. In addition to nutrition, we know through scientific research that at least 30 minutes of physical activity during the day also helps with learning and the ability to pay attention. Every student will have physical education every    day as well as a start to the day that focuses on “Waking up your Body.” You can find out more about nutrition on our Nutrition Program page and our “SFO” program at our DASA: Discovery After School Activities page.

We are excited at the possibility of offering your child a world-class education that will prepare them for our ever-changing future world. Upon completing the IB programs at Discovery, they will be extremely well prepared to further their education. We hope to offer years 11, 12, and 13 in the near future.
